The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), through its High Performance Computing for Energy Innovation (HPC4EI) initiative, has announced its intent to issue a new funding opportunity aimed at advancing the use of high-performance computing (HPC) in the U.S. manufacturing sector. This forthcoming solicitation will encompass the High-Performance Computing for Manufacturing (HPC4Mfg) program, which is supported by the DOE’s Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO) and the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Industrial Technologies Office (EERE ITO). The HPC4EI initiative serves as an umbrella for both the HPC4Mfg and HPC4Mtls programs, providing a platform for U.S. manufacturers to collaborate with DOE National Laboratories and leverage state-of-the-art supercomputing resources.
The primary purpose of this procurement is to foster short-term, collaborative projects between qualified industry partners and DOE national laboratories. These projects are designed to address complex challenges in energy and materials, with the overarching goals of reducing costs, improving efficiency and performance, strengthening supply chain resilience, and enhancing the global competitiveness of U.S. industry. By facilitating access to national laboratory expertise and computational capabilities, the program aims to accelerate innovation and the adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies.
Eligibility for participation is restricted to entities that manufacture products or conduct operations within the United States for commercial applications, as well as organizations that support these entities. This eligibility criterion ensures that the benefits of DOE’s HPC resources are equitably distributed among U.S.-based manufacturers and their supporting organizations.
Selected projects under this solicitation will be eligible for awards of up to $400,000. These funds are intended to support computing cycles and work performed by DOE national laboratories, universities, and non-profit partners. All DOE national laboratories are eligible to participate in these collaborations. Importantly, industry partners are required to provide a participant contribution of at least 20% of the total project funding, which may be fulfilled through either in-kind or cash contributions.
The solicitation will detail specific topics of interest relevant to the participating DOE offices, ensuring alignment with current national priorities in advanced materials and manufacturing. Interested parties are encouraged to review additional information about the HPC4EI initiative at https://hpc4energyinnovation.llnl.gov/.
